I had alot of trouble with Lab 9, especially when it came to getting my animations to load on my webpage. I have tried going to source for some other webpages and I still can’t get my animations to show up. There are white boxes with x’s where my animations should be. I have been troubleshooting witht his for a while and still can’t seem to figure out what I am doing wrong.

After talking to my instructor on the hone I was able to figure out my problem without a hitch. I had my GIF files in another folder within my HTML folder, so it was not recognized when it came to being on the world wide web.

This was by far the most difficult lab I have done yet. I had alot of trouble when it came to all of the boxes that were inside the neatline. I would often be making a text box and another smaller box would appear inside it. It took me a long to to be able to fix this. It required clicking outside the neatlines only once and than going back to the text box to move it outside so it would not disturb my final animation. I had the most trouble with the graduated symbol maps, it took me over twenty five minutes just to get the first two done so i could move them to photoshop. This lab was all about getting into a rhythm with the population density pictures. once i got in this groove it was very easy for me to finish up

I was a little behind so i am working on this particular lab with some of my classmates. For my classification scheme my lowest is -8.5 and my highest is 93.

For my dot density maps i chose a color scheme going from green to red, and 1 dot=18000

After the first slide its pretty cool to notice population migration starting from near new york city and expanding west and south through New Jersey as the years progress

For my graduated color map I used the color light green because it is after all, the Garden State. Green reminds me of agricultural.

For my graduated symbol map I used purple dots with a beige background

For my dot density map I also used a beige background accept this time, with green dots.

Finally, for my proportional symbol map, I used a green background with bright yellow dots

I was able to do steps 1-4 with ease, and by the end I had just my state and the counties individually outlined without the rest of the country when counties is checked

I made my projection NAD 1983 Great Lakes & St. Lawrence Albers

DBF / Dbase file- a way that the computer stores the numbers in the attribute tables

Select by Attributes- allows yu to sleect features on a given layer

Query- lets you retrive individual features from a layer

Fields (in a Table)- a colum in a table that stores values

Records (in a Table)- table that recording population information

Attributes- nonspatial information about a geographic feature

Relational Database- a structure for storing and managing information on arcGIS

Join function- joins a table view to a layer

Calculate / Field Calculator- when typed in years will calculate differences in population numbers in the attribute table

This lab was defiantly the most difficult for me thus far. In the latter part fo the exercise I had trouble mapping trhe highway data attributes for major highways in Ohio. I didnt know you had to double click on the highway attribute to put it in the box in the bottom. For my two map projections I added People that are 65 anmd older and those who are black. the projection I picked shows the earth from the top (north) and has everything spread out in a spherical way. On the outsides of the projections if a circle which outlines the ends of the earth.

I had trouble with the map attributes and picking a country. My instructor helped me with this.

Map Document- different document entities which contain your different map projections

Table of Contents- On the right bar and has the different data entries contained in the map

Data Frame- according to the ESRI site a data frame is the most fundamental element in arcGIS. A data frame hols different properties which will be projected on your map

Map Layer- Layers of different attributes which can be added to the world map which can be turned on and off at will

Attribute Table- table which holds the content of the different attributes on the ARC GIS map

While browsing the ESRI website i found alot of different articles that caught my interest. IN particular i thought it was pretty cool that you could enroll in online training courses, the next of which is in about 2 days from now, and that there are arcGIS events held all over the world

This lab was not necessary difficult, but it was tedious. After i opened my census data in excel, i had to copy each individual column and place it in my NewJerseyData spreadsheet. After i thought i was all through i looked back and for my first county I had the population of the entire state in that given year as opposed to the specific data. I don’t exactly know what went on here but it must have happened in the copy and paste stage to the new excel sheet. This resulted in me starting again from scratch. Everything from copying and pasting, to adding the y’s in front of the years, to the apostrophes before the FIPS code.

This lab was deffiantly the most difficult and tedious part of the class these few weeks in. I ran into a plethora of problems when it came to making my webpages public and using FireClient.

The first thing I had trouble with was the map mashup for new Jersey. i added all of my locations in by copying and pasting them from preferences when you right click on the locations in maps. I thought i did everything right but turns out i inadvertently left the degrees symbol in notepad, which the HTML did not recognize, so i deleted that.

The next set of problems I had were when it came to using fireclient and the transition from private to public page. I had alot of extra html addresses for my different webpages scattered about and in different formats. i.e. wordpad instead of notepad, b/c the html does not recognize pictures anyway.

The next problem I had is when it came to getting the right Google key in order for Google to know who is using their maps, and agree to their rules. I am still having a problem with this and it is saying that i need to get a new key, this is something i’m going to work on with my professor before the presentations in class

I am having alot of fun playing around with the HTML pages and using trial and error to figure out what is what. Learning from my mistakes really helps me, especially with something on the computer.

I started looking for my population data by searching US Census New Jersey population data, the first result I got was what I have posted above. On this quick facts site one has the ability to search by county, but everything is only for 2009 estimates. After getting a little more specific with my search and realizing I would need to dig around on other sites off GOOGLE, I began to have more luck. I had to search, us census bureau new jersey 1900, in orser to find what I was looking for.
